EASTER EGGS IN BUENOS AIRES

Soon after Carnival,
indecently mocking Lent,
the bakery's windows sprouted
round dark treasures
nestled in fake hay:
eggs of coarse chocolate covered
with stiff colored-sugar swans,
all wrapped
in noisy cellophane.

And sometimes,
in poorer years,
they languished for weeks,
the teal and yellow swans fading
with the autumn sun,
shrinking daily,
until the arrival of Corpus
Christi and winter swept them
from view,
replaced by plain flutes
of golden bread of the day.
