The murky river surrounds
the town’s lonely Christmas tree,
its lights still ablaze

on the peninsula in the park,
which is now an island,
but soon will be submerged.

The flood invades the trees
with brilliant water, but leaves
dark sludge behind, where

hundreds of dying fish flash
silver on black banks and golden
flowers will grow in spring.
