They counseled patience
waiting for the tide
to wash him back in

He’d set his watch
carefully on the night table
 
    *
 
Days or years lugging around
that great mahogany suitcase
of his
 
    *
 
Quit worrying he’d say
I’m not going to be
gone a minute
