Slime Molds (Myxomycota)

Mastigotes and myxamebas
Morph into each others' form.
Then they mate and make a zygote.
Soon mitosis breeds a swarm.

Multiplying nuclei with
No partitions of the cell
Produces a plasmodium, a
Slimy, wet, pulsating gel.

Orange, yellow, creeping slime molds,
Feeding on bacteria
Crawling on the surface of the
Forest cafeteria.

When the forest floor is thirsty,
Come some new phenomena:
The plasmodia transfigure,
Forming young sporangia.

Bursting from emerging mounds
Of Cytoplasmic concentrate,
On their slender stalks the fruiting
Sporocarps now emanate.

Inside these sporangia
Meioses happens, Spores mature.
Mastigotes and myxamebas
blossom, mate, and so endure.
