Famous/Infamous
THE BEHEADING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

Afterwards
Salome tears her hair out
she recognizes
in the impossibility of it
how he is larger now
gleaming complex ruby, liquid
collage of bone and cheek and hair
how he is everywhere with her, released
admonishments blare
even as from a battlefield
through unremarked spring
through the seven veils she sees
a first crocus rise
its purple hands stiff with prayer
sees how the dead live with us now
